African American Genealogy and Spirituality in the U.S.

Researching the Dawkins ancestry was not as difficult as any other African American ancestry.  I think a few of the stumbling blocks were Wallace's name was spelled differently on several documents, and Wallace first wife Rosa, which has also been spelled Rosie, died after the 1910 census.  Wallace remarried Viola.

My ancestry story begins with Isaac, born 1809~.  Issac is the first Dawkins of our "clan" that I can find so far.  I found Isaac on the 1880 census but could not find him, by name, on the 1870 census. I did, however, find Caroline (Clark) Dawkins on the 1870 census and there in the house was Isaac.   I have not had  much luck finding any of the African American Dawkins prior to 1870 census, this is in part due to it takes more intensive research on African American genealogy prior to emancipation.

If the records for 1870 and 1880 are correct, Isaac was considerably older than Caroline.  In the 1870 Census, it does not say whether Isaac and Caroline are married. It does say they are married on the 1880.  Keep in mind however that the census are not error-free and therefore, although they say they were married, let's keep in the back of our heads that maybe Caroline is the DAUGHTER of Issac and after 1865 were reunited along with Caroline's children (and Isaac grand children).  What makes this even more of a mystery is that on Wallace Dawkins' Social Security application (I possess a copy of the original), "Mother's Full Maiden Name" was typed and then circled "Unknown". Next to that however was written "Caroline Clark" by a handwriting that is not Wallace's (Wallace may not have been able to write because his application is "witnessed").

Until I find Isaac on the census or other documents, let's hypothesize that Isaac was a slave.  Afterall, having the last name Dawkins would most likely indicate, which was common, that the slave took the surname of the slave owner.  In Fairfield, South Carolina, there was a slave owner by the name of W.I. Dawkins, Elijah and Nancy Dawkins; each owned several slaves. By 1870 however Isaac and Caroline were sharecroppers and had a nice size and profitable farm.

Our Dawkins family took part in the nation's democracy. In 1948 Wallace is listed as "DS" (which could stand for "Did not state" or could be for Independent party). Van Dawkins was listed as Republican. (See second and third from bottom of first column).
